Fish Oil and Its powerful benefits

The effectiveness of fish oil in improving mood has been investigated in several human randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published in top journals. The conclusions from these studies are as follows:

  1. Fish oil supplementation showed little influence on mood and cognition in young, healthy individuals under both stressful and non-stressful situations (Giles et al., 2015).
  2. In overweight or obese non-depressed adults aged 50-80 years, fish oil did not significantly affect mood states. Responses were influenced by APOE4 status, indicating a potential improvement in mental wellbeing and quality of life in APOE4 non-carriers (Kuszewski et al., 2020).
  3. In patients with ischaemic stroke, moderate-dose fish oil supplementation over 12 weeks showed no significant effect on mood parameters (Poppitt et al., 2009).
  4. In mildly hypertensive older adults, long-chain omega-3 fatty acid (LCn-3PUFA) supplementation for 20 weeks showed no associated improvement in mood (Howe et al., 2018).
  5. In Parkinson’s disease patients with major depression, fish oil supplementation showed improvement in depressive symptoms (da Silva et al., 2008).
  6. However, a study on outpatients with major depression found that tuna fish oil supplementation provided no additional benefit to conventional treatment for depression (Grenyer et al., 2007).
  7. A study on healthy university students found few effects of n-3 PUFAs on cognition and mood states (Antypa et al., 2009).

In conclusion, the impact on mood improvement appears to be variable, depending on the population studied and individual characteristics such as age, health status, and genetic factors like APOE4 status. While there is some evidence suggesting benefits in certain groups, such as Parkinson’s disease patients, overall, fish oil supplementation does not consistently improve mood in all populations.
